Diaz fails drug test for marijuana
The rematch with Nick Diaz and Carlos Condit was inevitable. Every Diaz fan on the planet rejoiced in the fact that Diaz would have another shot at Condit and have the chance to face Georges St-Pierre in a showdown of all showdowns later this year. That was until the news broke Thursday about Diaz failing a drug test with the Nevada State Athletic Commission after his urinalysis came back positive for marijuana metabolites.

Colonels win one game in opening tournament
The Nicholls softball team went 1-4 at their opening tournament in Hammond this weekend. The Colonels fought back at the bottom of the seventh in their season opener when they scored four runs. They were unable to come back from an early deficit and lost 9-8 against Northern Illinois Friday night.

Broadcast students intern with Athletics Department
Every week, the athletic department airs a half-hour long television show entitled "This Week in Colonel Athletics" which is produced by interns who are usually broadcast journalism students from the Department of Mass Communication. Mike Wagenheim, coordinator of broadcast media, is the person responsible for implementing this type of program.

Football to play 3 FBS opponents
The Nicholls State football program announced its 2012 schedule on Friday, Feb. 3, which features three games against Football Bowl Subdivision opponents and four games at John L. Guidry Stadium. Charlie Stubbs, who admitted the schedule is far from easy, said he hopes that playing such high caliber programs will help the team improve and grow to their potential.

Allen reaches milestone
Women's basketball junior Alisha Allen scored her 1,000th career point during the Nicholls State 83-74 victory over Texas State on Feb. 4. The Colonels defeated the west division leaders with Allen finishing the game with 17 points and a new record to her name.

Baseball picked to be 11th and 9th in polls
The Nicholls State baseball team was picked to finish 11th in the Southland Conference coaches' poll and tied ninth by the Sports Information Directors. Head coach Seth Thibodeaux said that the polls do not bother him. Instead, it motivates him, and he knows that it motivates his players.

Game-winning coach motivates Nicholls
Former LSU basketball coach Dale Brown was the keynote speaker at the Sixth Annual First Pitch Banquet last Saturday night in the Bollinger Student Union Ballroom. This event was the first chance for fans to get to meet the 2012 baseball team before the start of the regular season.

Softball takes the field under new leadership this spring
With the start of their season approaching, the Nicholls State University softball team takes on two new coaches and a fresh focus for the 2012 season. Last September, nearly 30 applicants vied after the head coaching position for the Colonels. It was Nicholls Athletic Director Rob Bernardi, who hired Angel Santiago for the job.

Former Colonel plays for Australian national league with Sydney Kings
Former Nicholls men's basketball player Anatoly Bose is starting as a rookie and averaging 14.5 points and 6.5 rebounds a game for the Sydney Kings. The Sydney Kings is one of nine teams that play for the National Basketball League in Australia. The Kings are currently in a rebuilding period while trying to find consistency in a young and inexperienced team.

Colonels sign 14 players on Signing Day
The Nicholls State football team announced 14 student-athletes who signed their letter of intent on National Signing Day on Feb. 1. Head coach Charlie Stubbs met with the media, players and fans who gathered in John L. Guidry Stadium's Century Room to hear about the recruiting class.

Main Event is Worth PPV Price Alone
MMA fans are in for a treat Saturday night when the most exciting fighter in the UFC, Nick Diaz battles Carlos Condit for the interim title at UFC 143. Very rarely do I advise paying for a pay-per view for the main event alone, but this is one that is sure to be a Fight of the Year candidate.

Last week, Nicholls State University senior guard Sumar Leslie received her second weekly award and was named Louisiana Sports Writers Association Player of the Week to compliment her Southland Conference Player of the Week award she previously earned.

Washington shoots well behind the arc
Women's basketball senior guard, Portia Washington, leads the Colonels this season in 3-point field goal percentage, as she has shot 44 percent from behind the arc. When asked what her biggest strength as a basketball player is, Washington was quick to say, "shooting.
