UFC 127 was a relatively weak card but produced some intriguing storylines for the UFC, such as the future of the welterweight division and Michael Bisping’s unsportsmanlike antics.

The welterweight division is in limbo right now because welterweight champion Georges St-Pierre will move up to the middleweight division if he defeats Jake Shields at UFC 129, and now that BJ Penn and Jon Fitch’s fight at UFC 127 ended in a draw, things are getting complicated.

Two judges ruled the fight a draw as they gave the first two rounds 10-9 for Penn and scored the final round 10-8 in favor of Fitch.  I believe Fitch did enough to get the victory, but Penn did get Fitch’s back a couple of times.  Unfortunately for Penn, he was unable to do anything with it.

I presume the UFC will issue a rematch between the two, and the welterweight belt could be on the line should St-Pierre defeat Shields.  St-Pierre would vacate his title, and since no No. 1 contender emerged Saturday night, the two could battle it out for the gold.  Like I said, things are getting complicated at 170

Middleweight contender Bisping defeated Jorge Rivera by a second round TKO Saturday night in a match that had no love lost.  Bisping delivered an illegal knee in the first round, and I must say it looked intentional.  I know emotions are running high in the cage, but Bisping had time to think about the situation before he even threw it.  I would usually give him the benefit of the doubt, but Bisping wasn’t even apologetic after he threw it and started showboating to the crowd.

Rivera was able to continue, but he never fully recovered from the shot.  After Bisping won, he went to Rivera’s corner and spit in their direction.  He started swearing and was getting in Rivera’s face after the fight.  This was Brock Lesnar at UFC 100 all over again.  Rivera was trying to tell him that all the trash talk was to hype the fight, but Bisping told him he made it personal.  This is another example why people love to hate Bisping, and the guy wonders why people hate him.

So what’s next for Bisping?  Bisping has at least one more fight before he gets a title shot. Bisping vs. Chael Sonnen has the potential to have the greatest pre-fight hype in history.  I believe that if everything falls into place, the UFC will jump all over making this fight happen.  Sonnen has already proven that he can sell a PPV on his own, and with Bisping firing shots back at him, there will be plenty of money to be made.

Perhaps the biggest winner of UFC 127 was Dennis Siver as he defeated highly-ranked George Sotiropoulos.  Sotiropoulos was expected to take this fight to the ground and force Siver to submit, but Siver showed excellent takedown defense and was able to get the decision by out-striking Sotiropoulos.

The UFC is back at it again tonight when Diego Sanchez takes on Martin Kampmann on Versus at 8 p.m.
