Chris' sports thoughts

Inside Colonel Athletics

On March 18, 2004

Since the beginning of the semester, my mind has wrestled with many sports events that have taken place the past two months. From all of the Nicholls spring sports to collegiate sports to professional sports, I have a lot of thoughts about these topics that I need to get off of my chest.

I think former Ohio State running back Maurice Clarrett and his team of lawyers is a joke for thinking he can play just one year of college ball and then jump into the NFL. I think Clarett is a decent running back, but I do not think he is ready for the emotional or physical wear and tear of the NFL.

I think if I were to create a basketball team of the top five intramural players from the Nicholls intramural league, I think we could have a very good chance at beating the Colonels men's basketball team in a close game.

I think Kentucky, Pittsburgh, Connecticut and Duke will make it to the Final Four in San Antonio, Texas on April 3. I could care less what happens in the other rounds because I know that one of these four will win the NCAA tournament. Nevertheless, the tournment should be fun and exciting to watch.

I think the Nicholls lacrosse club will win the Lone Star Alliance championship this season. From offense to defense to goaltending, these guys are very good. What a big of a surprise it would be if the lacrosse club and coach Billy Tauzin, III, won a championship in just their second year of existence.

I think Colonels basketball player Willie Depron is the best basketball player at Nicholls since Gerard King graduated in 1998. For those of you who don't know Gerard King, he was the last basketball player from Nicholls to be selected in the NBA draft. By averaging nearly 15 points per game in his first season, he is my pick for newcomer of the year.

I think former Colonels cornerback Chris Thompson will be drafted by the defending NFL champion New England Patriots. He just seems like a Bill Belicheck type of defensive player with a fierce work ethic and great reaction skill. And don't forget that the Patriots love drafting Louisiana born players. Just look at their roster and you will find about five of them on there.

I think Nicholls teams need to recruit more local players in all sports. If the school wants to make money, don't forget that recruiting local talent packs the seats with loads of family and friends.

I think University of Colorado football coach Gary Barnett should be out of a job for the rape allegations surrounding his football program. As head coach, you should be held responsible for everything that goes on in your program. The last wish any coach wants is a dirty and bad reputation. In the NCAA, a dirty program can go a long way. And for Barnett and the University of Colorado, this is as severe as it gets.

I don't think Nicholls students should be persecuted for wearing LSU football championship gear. Since LSU won the national championship in January, many national championship hats and T-shirts have been seen on the Nicholls campus. One student approached me last Thursday during the first annual Media Day and said I needed to do an editorial against students wearing purple and gold more than red and gray. I told the student that I have no hatred for LSU, and that I am happy their football team won a national championship. My love and support for LSU football does not take away from me supporting Nicholls' sports. So to those students who wish to don the purple and gold, "may the force be with you." And to those students who don't like those who support LSU, "may the force be with you too." Geaux Tigers and Colonels!

I think the University police needs to chill out and stop harassing students who show school spirit at home games. It is amazing how the University wants students to come and show school spirit, but when a student says the smallest word to a visiting opponent, they get kicked out of the game. There is nothing more aggravating than watching a Nicholls police officer treat a student like a prisoner just for showing school spirit. Whether it is at Guidry Stadium or Stopher Gym, the student section looks like a kindergarten class with its legs folded Indian style. Whatever happened to want of home field advantage, or in Nicholls case, home field disadvantage.

After the softball team competes in the Buzz Classic this weekend in Atlanta, I think the softball team will cruise through Southland Conference play and reach the conference tournament for the second consecutive season. With a good pitching staff and defense, the Lady Colonels just need an effective offensive game to become a formidable force.

I think Chicken Monkey Turnips is the best intramural team name I ever heard of. I also feel that either Buleedat, Quiet Storm and D-Unit will represent Nicholls in the state intramural championships. These three teams are have the deepest rosters and biggest impact players in the league.

Wow, that really felt good that I got that off my chest. I could have put some more thoughts in there, but I think that is enough for one week.
