Use summer wisely to relieve fall stress
Issue date: 7/10/08 Section: Editorial
For those attending school this summer, classes will be coming to an end soon, and students should consider how they are going to spend their time between summer and fall semesters. We at The Nicholls Worth understand how important it is to use this time wisely, and we would like to make a few suggestions of tasks to accomplish during this time.
One important goal students can accomplish during their break is preparing themselves for their future, whether by planning ahead for school or for a job.
The most pertinent goal in planning ahead for school should be preparing one's financial aid. Students can use this break to fill out their FAFSA forms and check on their students loans; they can also apply for scholarships available on and off campus.
Another good way to plan for school is to start looking around for cheap books and begin shopping for other school supplies. Students should also try to work on any incompletes on their transcript, finish correspondence courses or even read ahead for classes if they know what books will be required; working a little bit during the break on these big tasks can help lighten a student's load during the semester and allow him or her to pay proper attention to classes.
An additional tip that can help students get ready for school is simply setting goals for the semester or thinking about one's daily schedule. Students should try to determine the things they want to achieve throughout their semester by making a list of long-term and short-term goals.
Making a realistic schedule can help them obtain those goals; setting aside time each day for specific classes and tasks, for example, can help keep us all on the right track.
This is also a good time to start planning for a career.
Students should contemplate how they can obtain an internship to help them gain experience in their field. In addition, they can use this vacation from school to prepare their résumés and portfolios; while collecting documents to include in portfolios, they can back up all their important computer files.
