    State drafts plans to protect Louisiana’s vanishing coastline

    After the revealing of the 2012 Coastal Restoration Master Plan last month, protecting the Louisiana coast has become the trending topic in the area. The 50-year, $50 billion plan is currently in the drafting stage, and the Coastal Protection and Restoration Authority is accepting public commentary until Feb.

  • Rape defined to include men

    For 85 years, the Federal Bureau of Investigation's rape definition was "the carnal knowledge of a female forcibly against her will." On Jan. 6, the FBI expanded the definition to include either gender. As stated in a press release from the FBI, this new definition states that rape includes "the penetration, no matter how slight, of the vagina or anus with any body part or object, or oral penetration by a sex organ of another person without the consent of the victim.

  • group Business team places in top 10

    A group of students in the College of Business Administration placed in the top 10 out of 20 schools for their recommendation of a publically traded company. The team included two master of business administration graduates, Aaron Ayme from Destrehan and Nolan Dumas from Thibodaux.

  • Dean to be sworn in on educational board

    John Doucet, dean of the College of Arts and Sciences and Louisiana's first certified public health geneticist, will join universities from around the country in promoting the education of genetics as part of the Education Board of the American Society of Human Genetics.

    Feb. 11 University Police was advised that a student in Ellender Hall threatened another student with scissors. The student was issued a misdemeanor and disciplinary summons. Feb. 14 A faculty member in Ayo Hall reported damage on an office door. The lock on the door is damaged, and it is reported that someone may have attempted to break in.

    Free hearing tests provided by Communicative Disorders Program The Communicative Disorders Program is presently conducting free hearing tests on campus at the Jo Carol Nolen Speech Language Hearing Center in 111-A Talbot. These hearing tests are being performed by Wendy Adams, audiologist, and students in the audiology practicum course.

    CrossFit classes to be offered for free Brian Ellender, instructor of languages and literature, will conduct CrossFit classes every Wednesday from 2 p.m. to 2:45 p.m. on the second floor of Stopher Gym, in the open area opposite the weight room. The exercise program offers a new workout every time and can be scaled to every level of fitness.

    Feb. 2 University Police was advised of children playing in Shaver Gym. An officer responded and found children of a parent visiting someone in the gym. Feb. 3 University Police was notified of a vehicle crash in the La Maison du Bayou parking lot near the Club House.

  • Graphics class gains international attention

    Projects from the Fall 2011 Art 456, Campaigns, are being used by a non-profit company in Arnaudville as part of the Council for the Development of French in Louisiana. This opportunity arose when a previous Campaigns class came up with a proposal for downtown Thibodaux.

  • Master’s program draws students

    "Build it and they will come," Gary LaFleur Jr., associate professor of biological sciences said about the expansion of the Department of Biological Sciences Graduate Program. When Marilyn Kilgen, Alcee Fortier professor and distinguished service professor of biological sciences, established the master's program, the faculty was unsure of how successful it would be.
