To the citizens of Houston, Texas, Hilton Koch is the chainsaw-wielding, price-slashing furniture store owner. But to Nicholls State, he is known as the fiery, over-achieving, do-it-all that earned his way onto the Colonel football team. Now, more than ten years after he left the small roads of Thibodaux for the four lane highways of Texas, Koch is the owner of Hilton Furniture and Mattress store, and recently, a WNBA franchise.
The Nicholls football team signed 16 standout athletes featuring four offensive linemen, three defensive backs, three linebackers, two defensive linemen, two defensive tackles, one defensive end and one quarterback. The recruiting class was finalized on Wednesday and included seven players from Texas, six from Louisiana, two from Mississippi, and one from Alabama.
The Lady Colonels soccer team received four in-state players on National Signing Day that will further their chances of a 2007 NCAA Division I Women's Soccer Championship appearance. The recruiting class includes defender Gillian McCarter, forward Kandice Champagne, defender Allison Flynn and defender Allison Mylius.
Despite being down early in the first half, the Lady Colonels basketball team picked up the intensity to keep things interesting Saturday afternoon in Stopher Gym, in a 60-66 loss to the University of Texas-San Antonio. The Lady Colonels had to play catch up from early on in the first half after being down by as much as 16 at one point.
