Tutoring Center helps struggling students

The tutorial learning center located in Elkins Hall offers students services to aid in their education in several subject areas. The purpose of the center is to help students who may be having a difficult time with a subject and may need extra work to overcome that difficulty.

There is a one time fee of $25 for science students and a $15 fee for all other students that are interested in attending.

Freshman level English, mathematics, chemistry, physics and Spanish are subjects in which students can receive tutoring.

Laura Jones is the director of the tutorial learning center and anyone could locate her in freshman division.

“We have a good tutoring program, and we also have a good success rate for those students who attend this program,” Jones said.

These services are open to anyone attending Nicholls. The tutorial center tutors students from Monday to Thursday for a 50- minute session.

“We cannot afford to let students miss class because we have paid tutors,” Jones said. “We have an absence policy.”

Students can miss only 4 classes from the time they begin the program until the semester ends.

A student may attend sessions on either Monday and Wednesdays or Tuesday and Thursdays with night classes also available.

A student may come in for tutoring anytime during the semester.

“Don’t wait too long to get assistance,” Jones said. There are 253 students currently enrolled in the program.

“There is space for 400 students,” Jones said.

She said she expects by the end of the semester more than 300 students will be enrolled in the tutorial program.

“The help is here,” Jones said. “We have many tutors who could help students.”

The tutoring center also assists the computer science lab and the WAC lab.

“We help support both of the labs,” Jones said.

Although the tutoring learning center no longer takes part in orientation, students still can obtain its brochures in freshman division

“More students might have been enrolled in the program if it was still a part of orientation,” Jones said.

Information about the program can be found on the Nicholls web site and also on the brochures which can be found in the tutorial center in Elkins Hall.
