Part-time employment good option for extra cash

Tuition. Textbooks. Housing. College students know education has a price. Many students choose to remedy this situation by pursuing part-time employment that will add to their checking accounts and fit into their busy course schedules.Heather Orgeron, communicative disorders senior from Thibodaux, house and pet sits in the Thibodaux area.

“We fed the cats and made sure the house was secure,” Orgeron said. “I’d do it again. It was really easy money.”

Orgeron was paid $50 for one week of home and pet care.

Interested in modeling? Nicholls’ art department advertises for student models once a year during the semesters in which figure drawing, Art 302, and intermediate drawing, Art 301, classes are offered. Job availability is limited however, because only one or two models are needed for the courses per semester.

“Normally [students are paid] $15 per hour. Students can sit 60, 80 or even 100 hours in a semester,” Michael Wyshock, professor in the school of fine arts, said.

Students who are interested in modeling for art classes can get more information by contacting Wysock in the art department.

Working as a sales representative for Mary Kay is another interesting alternative.

“The reason I started Mary Kay was because I liked the makeup,” Latonya Calloway, mass communication junior from Houma, said.

A $116 start-up fee is required for the purchase of a start-up kit.

“The kit includes makeup, cleanser, cosmetic sponges and brochures,” Calloway said. “I host Mary Kay parties, and when a client needs a product, I place their order on the Internet. You earn 50 percent of your sales.”

James Butler, secondary education junior from Jeanerette, helped host a garage sale in the lobby of Millet-Zeringue Hall to earn extra money.

“You can sell Super Nintendo games, clothes, shoes and used textbooks for extra cash. You just have to set a date and location that is convenient for people,” Butler said.

Lauren Cenac, English junior from Houma, tutors high school students in math. Cenac’s standard rate for tutoring is $20 per hour.

“I like it because I can brush up on my math skills,” Cenac said. “When a student gets stuck on a problem, we both work it out to see where it went wrong.”

Students can also earn a few extra dollars recycling aluminum cans and other scrap metal materials. Southern Scrap Metals in Houma offers 45 cents per pound for aluminum cans and 37 cents per pound for other aluminum products.

Students interested in working online can access websites such as studentworknow.com and cashforsurveys.com. They offer students access to American work listings, a collection of online product research and development surveys sponsored by various corporations.

Access fees for admission to the site’s job listings range from $25 to $30. Students can earn $4 to $50 per survey.
